Whisper Ranch Grass Finished Beef
2017 - 2018 Premium Highland Beef Herdshare
Welcome to our first year of grass finished beef production on our land. We are stoked and excited for those of you that will partner with us in this journey!
After much consultation, education and deliberation we have settled on bringing some Highland Cattle steers to our land. Highland cattle are gaining traction around the world as extremely efficient cattle. They break all the current commercial cattle "isms" but are proving themselves to be the smart choice in the right environment.
Highland cattle with their distinctive ancient look, originate from the miserably inhospitable environment of the Scottish Highlands. Maybe their is kindredness in it as that's where Chad's roots are from some generations back. One the oldest domesticated cattle breeds, Highland cattle have generations of history thriving in cold, rainy and poor quality forage conditions. Their unique double coat is what gives them the competitive advantage in harsh conditions. Their long horns and hardy nature have made them able to navigate mountainous rocky terrain, ward of large predators and an ability to dig through the snow to find forage. Highlanders also have considerably longer lifespans than other breeds. Highland cattle also require very little assistance in calving.
Our land and location would not be suitable for more commercial breeds of cattle. When it comes to withstanding weather, our ranch receives on average snowfall of nearly 12 feet. Another profound reason Highland cattle are a fit for our land is their ability to browse brush and they will consume lower quality forages that most cattle will not touch. The Highlanders desire to browse is similar to a goat and is a unique quality to its breed. Our land is filled with brush and bushes waiting to be browsed by the happy Highlander. In utilizing their unique desire to browse we will begin a fundamental transformation of our land from brushy unusable land to productive pasture.
Highland cattle function best with no supplement of grain. The only practical thing they require past grass and water is natural mineral supplements. We don't use any hormones or antibiotics. This produces a slow growing exceptional meat. Due to Highlanders double coat, they do not develop back fat like commercial cattle, instead the marbling is contained throughout the meat, making a remarkably lean premium quality meat. Highland beef is global award winning beef.
