How to Order Your Pig
We have chosen to involve you, our farm friends in helping us grow our ranch. As is widely known, farming carries certain risks and large and lengthy financial outlays before any income is generated. Successful small farms rely on methods whereby customers pay a deposit towards their product which helps the farm make its way through a long season of expenses. This keeps small farms out of the endless cycle of bank loans. We have also found that there are two additional benefits for the customer to this approach. One is a customer will find it easier when the financial payments are broken up, especially in some of the more costly products. Secondly the customer feels like they have invested interest and motivation to come and visit the farm and be an overall cheerleader through the the daily challenges farmers face. We have maintained our prices for the last few years. Why do we charge what we charge? Because that's what it costs us to produce our unique family raised pork. We use truly chemical free feed, straight from a small family farm in Alberta. This top quality feed comes at a price. We don't buy our piglets from commercial hog operations so we have to pay more for our piglets. Our piglets come from small family farms that believe in outdoor and humane care of pigs. We have also gained a thorough understanding of all the unforeseen costs in raising pigs - and there is lots of them! Next in line, the government has instituted a mandatory tagging and tracking program. The government instituted this because of the mass outbreaks of diseases in factory farms. This in theory, helps them track these diseases. The government naturally paints everyone with the same brush, even though we have as much to do with those farms as oil and water have to do with each other. This tracking program now requires expenses in tags and tools, additional pig handling and endless layers of paperwork. We're not happy about it, but we need to do it according to the law. Last year we have invested in a refrigerated truck which comes at heavy price tag in use and maintenance. We believe this investment will serve you best in the long term by providing more deliveries and additional products throughout the calendar year as we grow. You will notice that we price our cost of delivery separate from the pork order. We do this for two reasons. One is so that you the customer understand the true costs of bringing you quality products. And two, as the ranch grows we want to maintain flexibility to treat delivery as a stand alone operation. So with that in mind, below is our prices and required deposit for pork this year. Please visit our on-line store for a deposit payment. We are also happy if you want to make more than the minimum deposit - every bit helps! Just below is a downloadable 2018 retail price list, and below that are the bulk prices, downloadable cut chart, example butcher form. We currently have some limited retail items in stock for sale.

DEFINITION OF HANGING WEIGHT: The weight of the carcass after slaughter but before butchering. The blood has been drained, the intestines removed, and parts like the head and feet cut off. Hanging weight is about 72% of live weight. Cuts of meat is about 48% of live weight. If you choose to use organs, bones, lard, hocks etc your % use of live weight increases significantly.
